About the King's Town Company of Ringers

In September 2001 ringing began again at Holy Trinity after a £1.1 million restoration project. At the same time work was progressing at St Mary's Lowgate to get the six ringing after 45 years silence. It was felt that ringing in Hull would benefit from a single band to recruit, train and ring at both towers. With this in mind the King's Town Company of Ringers was formed in September 2001. St Mary's started ringing again with the dedication ceremony on 29th June 2002, this was attended by ringers and friends from all over the country.

You can read about the restoration of Holy Trinity at trinitytower.org.uk and St Mary's Lowgate at lowgate.org.uk.

At the moment we have about 20 ringers "on the books" however many of these live out of the area and many aren't available every week. With a 12 bell and a 6 bell tower to keep ringing we are constantly looking for new ringers to teach or returning ringers to join us.

The King's Town Company of Ringers has a very active social life. We arrange a society dinner every year to try to get everyone together. We also visit our local pub after every practice and always have breakfast together after Sunday service ringing. This helps everyone feel part of a team and enjoy each others company. We try to arrange one outing a year to a different part of the county, see our outings page for more information of where we've been.

Officers of the Society

Assistant Ringing Master - Howard Pickering

Howard is one of our longest serving ringers having learnt to ring at Holy Trinity in the late 50's, Howard rang for many years at All Saints, Rise before family and work commitments forced him to reduce his ringing. Since moving back to Hull though Howard's ringing career has taken off again and is trying to get Cambridge off.

Secretary - Glynis Baxter

Glynis was one of the first learners at St Mary's Lowgate since the bells were restored. She's made steady progress and has rung several quarters with the King's Town Ringers.

Accountant - Emma Baxter

Emma was one of the last people to learn to ring at Trinity before the restoration of St Mary's was complete. She made very quick progress at St Mary's and is now a regular ringer in our quarter peal band. Emma is currently learning to ring Surprise Major and rang her first peal in 2005 - the first of our learners to do so.

Social Secretary - Janet Rowan

Janet started learning to ring at Holy Trinity before the restoration of St Mary's. As well as been an active supporter of the band Janet is a keen CAMRA member and wrote an article about ringing in the local CAMRA magazine, click here to see the article.

Steeple Keeper - David Stipetic

David is one of the last people to have rung at St. Mary's Lowgate before they stopped ringing in 1957. David began to learn to ring in 1950 and called several quarters at Lowgate. Once these bells fell silent David continued at Holy Trinity and was deeply involved in the augmentation from 10 bells to 15.

Assistant Steeple Keeper - Bernard Deakin

Bernard started learning to ring after the restoration of St Mary's and has quickly become attached to the tower. He's rung many quarters on the tenor with us and is progressing onto trebling at the moment. His major project now that he is retired is beginning work on further soundproofing of the ringing room ceiling so that he can hear us putting him right.
